It is good to be aware of your surroundings when recreating in an area that is potentially dangerous for avalanches.

Follow these steps to make sure you can be prepared and know when an area is unsafe:

  • Know the Terrain: the slope must be steeper than 30 degrees to pose significant avalanche threat.
  • If snowpack is unstable – don’t go near it.
  • Listen for and watch for triggers – stresses that cause a weak layer of snow to collapse and avalanche. Make sure you are not that trigger!
